Scouting… Just one hour a week commitment
I am the current Scoutmaster for my troop of boys. I got elected when it became obvious that our old Scoutmaster was having some health problems and needed the chance to step away at times. I was, as I am sure a lot of other people that volunteer, told that it only takes an hour a week.
Well that might be just a little bit of an understatement. This week is a good example. Sunday we had a Eagle Project building some fence at a local nature preserve. Monday we had our regular one and a half hour meeting. Wednesday is Committee Meeting where the parents and the adult leaders get together and discuss the program and try to manage the business of the troop. This is also where the Boy Scouts themselves are suppose to provide direction on what they would like to do with their program. Saturday we have an outing to a yearly air show at one of the local military bases. Sunday ends the week with an Eagle Court of Honor, where a young man having meet all the requirements to become and Eagle Scout is given a very formal party to announce his achievement.
It is by no means a small accomplishment to make all of these things happen and still work a full time job, and have a family life outside of it all. But Scouting is one of those choices that I would make again and support. It makes such a difference is some of these boys that keeps them working towards bigger goals in life and knowing that it is possible to attain them.
